Sandstone Products

Photo of sandstoneSandstone is a sedimentary rock, formed by the erosion of rock by water which permeates the stone bed. Over a period of millions of years, the rock is transformed into sandstone. This process causes the sandstone to become rich in colour and has various other attributes such as defined grains.

Sandstone from the Ablatio quarry comprises hard and massive, predominantly fine coarse grain, and varies in colour from caramel browns, salt and pepper, lavender to pink and white stone. Sandstone is a natural product and therefore is non-fading, has no smell and is environmentally friendly.

Other qualities include its non-slip nature which allows it to be used on floors, both indoor and outdoor, around swimming pools, as well as on walls and on projects that require a natural look that blends with the surroundings.

Photo of sandstone wallAblatio sandstone has high compressive strength and is therefore suitable for dimensional stone and blocks that can be used for the construction of buildings of various designs. Sandstone is extracted from the quarry in blocks that weigh between 2 tonnes to 11 tonnes.

This block is then processed into profile on the computerized diamond wire saws or sold to export markets for processing into tiles used for the cladding of up-market housing and commercial buildings. The smaller blocks are processed into tiles and paving products for sale in the domestic landscape market.

A by-product of the extraction process is broken stone. The broken stone is usually too small for processing and is stockpiled for crushing and tumbling into decorative pebble for landscape. This product contains all the colours mentioned above and is popular as a decorative stone.
