How to lay pavers
Laying pavers is easy. Start by marking your footprints on the goat track and that is where you centre your pavers.

Feature Item
Tumbled pebbles and rock are by-products of the extraction process. Blocks or boulders that are too small for profile or other use are either broken by a hammer to a certain size, usually 300mm x 300mm and random length or crushed in a crusher to four different pebble sizes.

History

The QuarryThe following is an extract from a report by Hollingsworth, Dames and Moore (1991):

"Sandstone has been quarried in the Helidon area for over 110 years and has been used on a significant number of prestige buildings in the South East of Queensland. The site was originally known as millers Quarry and was purchased by the State Government in the 1920’s. It was passed in succession to J.H. Wagner & Sons, R.C Ziegler Quarries and T. Spratt. The latter owners produced small quantities of stone before the site was subdivided in 1986. The southern pits passed to Mr .T. Comerford and the northern pit was retained by Mr. Spratt who subsequently sold it to Helidon Sandstone Co. Pty. Ltd. in 1987.

The site was acquired by Ablatio Pty. Ltd., a company owned by the St. Johns Cathedral Chapter, from the State Bank of New South Wales as mortgagee in procession on June 17, 1991 on the undertaking that the Mining Lease Application 50007 made by Helidon Sandstone Company Pty. Ltd. on November 30, 1990 would be granted in accordance with the transition provisions of the Mineral Resources Act 1989-1990. The purpose of the purchase was to continue the extraction of building stone”.

The purchase was also to ensure that the supply of sandstone required for the completion of St John's Cathedral would be available.

Photo of St John's CathedralRecent use of sandstone from the site includes St John's Cathedral in Brisbane, (ongoing completion with completion forecast for 2009), Port Douglas Sheraton Mirage Resort, Manuka Shopping Village (Canberra), Deans Gallery and Bond University (Gold Coast). St Johns Brisbane has been the main consumer of Ablatio Sandstone since the Company was formed in 1991.

The Ablatio Sandstone Mining Lease (ML50007), covering approximately 12 ha is located approximately 5km from Helidon on the corner of Goldmine Road and Airforce Road. The site is approximately 110km from Brisbane which is the capital of Queensland.

Current quarry resources are in excess of 30 years extraction at a rate of 10,000m3 per annum.

Ablatio Sandstone has high quality diamond saw cutting equipment and produces A Grade export block, A & B grade dimension stone, blocks, boulders, pebbles, tiles, paving and intricately cut sandstone products.
