Architectural/Building
A great example of the use of sandstone in building is St John's Cathedral in Ann street, Brisbane.
The sandstone used was quarried from the Ablatio quarry in Helidon, Queensland. The stone was then profiled on a computer controlled diamond wire saw and finished by the banker masons.
Every stone is numbered on the master plan and a drawing for each individual stone is then used to profile and finish the stone to the exact specifications of the drawing, ensuring that each stone fits during the construction process.
Sandstone, combined with the use of phorphery stone, ensures that the Gothic design is achieved. Sandstone can also be seen in many other buildings around Brisbane. For instance, City Hall, the Treasury Building and on the Gold Coast at Bond University.
Not all of this stone was supplied by Ablatio but the bulk of the stone came from the Helidon area. When you review the St John's website you will see the quality of the sandstone and also the profiling and shaping capability of the Ablatio equipment and personnel. |
